Being Spanish, it is almost unavoidable to find “Goyaesque” references in his paintings. With some reminiscences from the “Black Paintings” of Goya, Nievas develops the “Bestiary and masks” series.

From the most ancient civilizations, the iconography of beasts and masks has always be present in cult and leisure places (the gothic gargoyles, the columns in roman amphitheatres, etc)

The human desire of representing themselves and the fear of the unknown, make these representations very attractive and surprising beyond the beauty.

The technique used in these paintings is very special and personal:

On a calcareous white and wet surface, layers of black and sienna pigments are applied. These layers are removed with different tools, letting the light and the form appear. Like a bas-relief, the work emerges from the canvas.

Born in 1956 in Alfaro, La Rioja (Spain), Fernando got interested in arts at an early age.

Studying academic art at high school and his increasing interest in the avant-garde took him to Madrid in the 70’s. Along with his self-taught background he worked and collaborated with several artists. All the while learning different pictorial, modelling, foundry and printing techniques (serigraphy, engraving, etc). Those were the years of his first exhibitions.

In the 80’s Fernando goes back to his hometown Alfaro, where he sets up his studio. During this decade he combined his experimental work and research with commissioned decorative paintings.

From the 90’s onwards he has been exclusively dedicated to his art.

"I take creative approaches and when I start to get too comfortable I sabotage my own work. When the tension fades away, it is better to change rather than feeling a slave of my own style."
