Used Postage Stamp Image

This picture is created from approximately 2500 used postage stamps plus the occasional use of artist quality acrylic paint. It is varnished plus UV protection but must not be hung in direct sunlight.

The reference to “Dali’s Left the Doors’ Ajar” is simply that to the left side of Dali (not the viewer) a door is open allowing his audience to view outside. Upon further examination however the top of the door resembles the screw thread of a glass jar within which the clouds frame a flock of birds flying towards the setting sun, romantic notions typical of Dali. He patchwork of themes (typical of Dali’s paintings) continues with references to another of his well known works – that of “ The Hallucinogenic Toreador “ 1968/70, where death is represented by the dying toreador, the dying flowers, the petrified flies within a bull ring, implicitly the bull fighter or bull. Venus is trapped within the jar - having no arms therefore without means of escape even though the door is not locked but actually ajar.

Peter Mason
Peter Mason

My name is Peter R. Mason and I studied Fine Art at Stafford College of Art. I am now known as the Post Pop Art Man as I create images with used postage stamps. I am inspired by the Pop Art movement and particularly admire the works of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. My portraits and images are created by recycling postage stamps into pixelated images to create portraits and designs both figurative and non-representational. Each stamp represents a pixel. I start by drawing the image on canvas dividing the surface into stamp sized rectangles, but I often use more than one stamp per single rectangle. Stamps are sorted by colour, design and postmark pattern, and then I begin the process of finding appropriate stamps before cutting and shaping them and finally gluing them to the canvas surface. I have work owned and commissioned by clients in America, Australia, France, and Portugal as well as in the UK.
